The Jewish Women's Breast and Ovarian Cancer Genetics Study

This year approximately 243,000 women will be diagnosed with breast or ovarian cancer in the United States.  One in eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime.

A genetic predisposition is suspected in up to 15% of women who develop these disease and have one or more affected close relatives.   Many of these families will be found to carry mutations in the two most well-known genes responsible for hereditary breast and ovarian cancer, the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes.  However, a significant portion of families that are suggestive of a genetic predisposition are found to not be linked to the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes.

What other genetic factors can explain the risk in such families?  How can we improve our ability to predict breast cancer risk for future generations?  Help us to find out and be a part of the solution.
